Hi

While I realise that most on this list are Hallicrafters fans - I am too (S38C,
SX 28) - you probably have a depth of know-how about ALL good hollow-state
receivers, especially those weighing in at >70 lbs. I am interested in buying a
Hammarlund SP 600, however, as an overseas purchaser, I face a few dilemmas:
a.. Which model(s), of the huge variety that were made over the years, should
I aim for?
b.. What particular problems should I "look" out for - i.e. what sort of
questions should I pose of a seller, especially an overseas seller? (Assuming
the seller is not merely disposing of a set for someone else. Some sellers
barely seem to know what they are offering - often a good point as they are
ignorant of the set's true value!)
c.. What would be a reasonable US$ price? (I realise that anything bought
sight unseen is possibly/probably a pig in a poke that will need the usual
treatment: re-capping, shorts-to-ground tests, Variac, etc.)
d.. There are virtually no SP600s (in or for sale) in South Africa. Either
held on to tightly by enthusiasts or sold off overseas to rapacious collectors
elsewhere - so I will have to look widely at the various collectors' lists - any
ideas which list(s) might be worth looking at?
I am not worried if I am offered a "non-working" item as I have resuscitated
several Hammarlunds and my two Hallis were sold "dead on inspection". Any help,
even heavily opinionated, would be appreciated.

Regards
