[Hallicrafters] 5 Mhz Band Update

Pete,

Some points well taken.

At the risk of sounding critical of the Ham fraternity, in my opinion, the
technical skills of the operators has taken a serious downwards turn over the
past two decades. I seriously doubt that most Hams could figure the center
frequency for bandwidth, as well as effective radiated power and so forth. They
are what is commonly called 'appliance operators'. Unfortunately, there is too
much truth in this broad generalization nowadays.

I am still trying to figure out why we are getting this band in the first place.
The picture continues to change and the facts start to blend together. Aren't we
secondary users?

Now twelve and seventeen meters are great bands, but who uses them? A few I know
do use seventeen, but I do not know anyone who uses twelve. I wonder why this
is?

I am always leery when we are 'given' something, because it generally means we
are losing something in the process. The question becomes, what, when and who
really wants what we are losing anyhow?

>From what I have been reading, I don't think I would try to run
anything vintage on this new band of ours. Stability and frequency
accuracy are going to be concerns. I have an Icom 765 that with careful
use should be up to the task. I can see this being a problem for lots
of people. Now the latest is you are supposed to have antenna data on
hand calculating gain figures, and consequently ERP if your antenna is
anything other than a half wave dipole. I haven't seen anything about
taking into account losses in the system such as matching networks,
feedlines etc. Not really a big deal, but most people are just not used
to looking at all of these things. My guess is they will be policing
this band to see what kind of operators we are. At the end of the day I
wonder if it is worth all the trouble.....
But bands are bands, and we need to use them.
