One particular "gotcha" as per A.B. Bonds is possible carbonization of
the bandswitch wafers which can eventually cause arcing and damage to
components, like coils, etc. This comes about, as I recall, from bad
caps and/or dirt buildup. Actually, it's a chicken and egg problem. To
head it off, clean the phenolic wafers with alcohol. He found some deep
carbonization which he managed to clean out. I think the theory was that
bad caps caused the arcing, which cause the carbonization, which in turn
caused a downright short.
As you probably already know, be careful with DeOxit on the switch wafers
-- don't spray them -- just apply to the rotor traces and work the switch
in. If DeOxit soaks into the phenolic it may swell and cause binding.
