Roy,

I have an SX-28 with one of those fused plugs.  I believe it is a very 
early model and there is no fuse on the rear panel where most have them. 
 There is no way to be totally sure but I believe it came from 
Hallicrafters that way - sure enough to suggest that you add it to your 
'list'.

I do like Variacs; I wire mine so the output can only go to 100% of the 
input.  That way the worst case is like plugging the load directly into 
the wall socket.  I also use a voltmeter when appropriate.  You might 
argue that this is dangerous because I could become complacent and 
assume that *all* Variacs are so wired but hey, you have to use common 
sense in this business anyway.  -My $.02
