I was able to attend the Springfield, IL hamfest Saturday (unfortunately
had to miss Princeton on Sunday due to work issues) and came up with a
couple more Hallitreasures for the shack.
First, a nearly new condition S-118 Mk II ($35) that works fine, but I'd
like to find a readable schematic for it. The scan on Bama is just not
readable on screen or in print around the area of the circuitry I'd like
to investigate (the combo bfo/2nd IF amp). I bought a schematic
"online" but it turned out even less readable.
The S-118 is basically an AC-powered S-120 with an additional IF amp.
Performance is marginally better than the S-120, which was my first
"real" receiver as a novice.
Second nice find was a SX-43 with a clean though a tad faded front
panel, all knobs present and intact ($65, not tested). The case needs a
re-repaint with the correct color so I'm glad to hear Mike is back
shipping his fine paints again. After replacement of one shorted screen
bypass cap(easy) and one shorted 220pf cap inside one of the IF cans
(not so easy, but finished this morning), it's playing quite nicely on
AM, FM and everything in between. Well, almost, the 44-55 Mc band needs
some tweaking. But after staring at the lifelong bandswitch repair and
pick a random schematic that doesn't match the radio project that my
SX-42 has become, it's nice to find something easy to fix! The SX-43
will be in the queue for a complete capacitor replacement, as I think it
will get quite a bit of use in the shack.
I'm kicking myself now as I did not grab the SP-44 panadaptor ($75
asked, complete, not tested) that was available from the same fellow who
had the SX-43. Those don't pop up all that often. It appears my brain
is also losing some bypass capacitors over time.
