Ed,
More information -- I am now where I have my HT-44 data. The four capacitors
are C10, C11, C12, C13. Look for them on the sockets of V3 and V4, the 12BH7A
Balanced Modulator tubes. As manufactured, they were 0.01 uF paper capacitors,
10%, 200V rated. The capacitors I used were Radio Shack 272-1051 units, 0.01
uF, 400 volt rated metal-film units. The HT-44 has worked flawlessly with
these units for some time now. I should note that others have fixed this problem
in different ways. This worked for me.
Hope this further information helps.

Ed,
Yes, not uncommon. In the balanced modulator circuit there are four 0.01uF
capacitors that seem to go bad. They are tube shaped and silver in color. You
can't miss them in the radio or on the schematic (which I do not have with me
right now). I temporarily solved the problem with my particular HT-44 by
redressing those four capacitors outward from the sockets. Later, however, the
problem returned. At that time, I replaced the capacitors with some simple Radio
Shack mylar 0.01uF units 100% success.
Sorry I don't have further details with me right now -- but would be happy to
provide same if needed.
