You need it to match the normal output of most signal
generators to the approximately 300 ohm input
impedance of the receiver.  Otherwise the alignment of
the r.f. stages will not be close to optimum.

However, you can replace all of this with a TV type
balun coil and will not have any problems aligning the
receiver.  See the article on using TV baluns on
either of the websites that are at the end of this
message.
