Sandy,
Thanks for the added info.
I had heard of this but couldn't remember the exact kink and couldn't
find it in my stacks.

Most of the old "All American Five" AC/DC sets used the same scheme. If
the #47
pilot lamp burns out, replace it ASAP! If you don't the Filament
section from pin 2
to 3 of the 35Z5 will soon follow!
A "dodge" to use the 35Z5 with a burnt out heater section from pin 2-3
is to remove
the 35Z5, solder a link from pin 2 to 3 (#24 wire will do!) and plug it
back in. The
set will work but sans the dial lamp!
This was a "frequent fix" in low income neighborhoods so a family would
have the use
of the radio without buying a replacement tube!

| The lamp is indeed a #47.
|
| It is connected from the plate and filament tap of the 35Z5 (these are
| shorted together, pins 5 & 3) to the side of the line plug not
connected
| to the power switch.
|
| Another way to describe it is in parallel with the 330 ohm resistor
| connected from the 35Z5 filament center tap to the unswitched side of
| the power plug.

|
| Friend of mine got an S-38 and noticed the # 47 bulb pilot lamp was
| wired
| across i.e.. shorted out deliberately. He also noticed the filaments
| are
| wired
| in series to equal the line voltage. He assumed the # 47 bulb might
| have
| been
| part of this string and wired the bulb in series with the filaments.
|
| The bulb burned too brightly and may have burned out. I don't know.
| Anyway,
| does anyone know where this bulb should be wired in the S-38? If it
is
| in
| series with the filaments, it must be some other bulb type.
