Friend of mine got an S-38 and noticed the # 47 bulb pilot lamp was wired
across i.e.. shorted out deliberately. He also noticed the filaments are
wired
in series to equal the line voltage. He assumed the # 47 bulb might have
been
part of this string and wired the bulb in series with the filaments.

The bulb burned too brightly and may have burned out. I don't know.
Anyway,
does anyone know where this bulb should be wired in the S-38? If it is in
series with the filaments, it must be some other bulb type.
