What do you know! We've heard from my friend Duane. Yes, I know, Duane.
I'm way overdue in making a trip to Flint to say "hello" again. You're not
supposed to be this busy when you get near that 80th, but seems like I'm
always "up to here" in one hobby job, or another.
I seriously doubt that "heavy metals" have anything to do with my hearing
loss. I've always blamed it on the 20 mm anti-aircraft gun which was placed
directly over the Radio Room on those Liberty Ships. That should make me
proud of my "wounds" -- only one big catch! My Dad had this same problem at
my present age. Dad, the local small town School Superintendent, blamed it
on a summer supervisory job at the local cannery (All those cans rattling
around on conveyor belts made big-time noise). But, brother Bill has that
same problem, even at 8 years younger than I. And my older brother has also
worn hearing aids for many years. It looks suspiciously as if it's in our
genes!
Nitroglycerine, eh? None of my chemistry students (back in my several
teaching years) ever tried anything quite that bad! Nothing worse than "If
a little sodium is fun to drop in water, a big piece ought to be more fun".
Luckily, no earth shaking damage was done to either the school, or the
student.
Darn it, but I've really been enjoying the "itch" that that Scott posting on
"x-harbor" has been giving me! I'm only lucky that it's not the same model
we had on board ship. That one I don't think I could resist! Often, with
Old Radios (other things, as well) -- the temptation is often more than half
of the fun! And we don't have much room left in the house anyway, for more
old stuff! Just like fishermen, we love to talk about "the one that got
away"
