hello!
i have both s-38 and s-38c models. in answer to your first question, i think
the reason the later models ommited the bfo pitch control was for purposes
of economy. you see, all the models have a bfo, but the bfo on the s-38 is
on a separate tube all together, along with a separate 455kh variable
transformer, to provide pitch control of the cw signals.
the s-38c, on the other hand, uses the I.F. amplifier tube(v2).
therefore, my guess is that a five tube radio is cheaper to build than a six
tube s-38.

for your second question, you are correct about the s-38. it has a
fluorescent green faceplate with black lettering, while my s-38c has a black
face plate with white lettering.

i think the s-38 is widely more desirable, due to the fact one can vary the
cw pitch. although, i have found it impossible in my case to tune a single
cw signal, due to the wide tuning range. i can hear multible signals on top
of each other, but thats about it.
as far as selectivity goes, especially on bc stations, i have found it more
than adequate to the task of seperating weak stations in close proximity to
strong ones. this does, however, require a delicate hand, even on the band
spread knob.

i think that for general SWL, the s38 line, whichever version, is a fun
radio and good performer at a modest price.

my 2 cents worth,
