Actually it wasn't unusual to listen for and work someone 25 kHz away as a
novice.

I was a rock-bound novice too. I was somewhat spoiled because my Dad was a
ham too so there was some gear & parts around to work with. He would let me
use the NC-300 but I had to build my novice tx. Looking for simplicity, I
tried a single 6AG7 from a '56 or so Handbook. Ordered a xtal I could use
on 80M & double to 40M. What I received was an HC-6/U type. Well, that 6AG7
was designed for hearty FT-243s, and ate that xtal up before I finished
learning to tune up. Having that lesson out of the way I found some
FT-243's, tried my hand at grinding 'em, built a single 6146 from a later
Handbook ('64?) and finally got started. A DX-40 came my way soon after
that & occupied most of my Novice time.
