I we are "telling tall tales" about Hallicrafters and
Novice operation:

In September of 1959, I was using a Hallicrafters
S-107 and a Globe Chief 90A transmitter (got my Novice
late May 1959 and upgraded in November of 1959) and
called CQ on 15 meters. KC4USB in Marie Byrd Land,
Antarctica, came back and I worked him for several
minutes. I had no sooner signed with KC4USB than the
telephone rang. There was a local who was the manager
of the regional General Telephone Company office who
ran a lot of phone patches for the KC4 stations.

It seems that he had heard me working them and that he
was also a QSL manager for them! He had already
filled out the card. Since he lived about a half-mile
from my parent's house, I jumped on my bicycle and was
there in less than 10 minutes to collect my first real
DX (Canada was closer than southern Indiana - the
state that I lived in at the time - so it didn't
count!).

I know that there may have been faster times from
working true DX to getting the QSL card, but I think
that definitely ranks among the top 10!
