In answer to #2: A signal generator is not intended to be a frequency
meter. The frequency indication is approximate and they don't have the
resolution to set them to a precise frequency. I monitor the output of my
signal generator with a frequency counter and use that for setting the
generator on frequency. I have a surplus URM-25 that I am pleased with. I
connect the counter to the X-200k output where it unaffected by the
attenuator setting. With an external pad I can measure sensitivity down
to .1 uV. These generators are available from Fair Radio Sales
