As a general rule you always adjust the coil for the low frequency end
and the trimmer cap for the high frequency end. You should adjust the
oscillator first. Tune the radio and sig gen to 600 kc and adjust the
coil for max. Then set the radio and sig gen to 1500 kc and adjust the
trimmer cap. Go back and do the 600 kc again as it probably changed. Then
redo the 1500 kc. Keep going back and forth until they are both right on.
If you have a long way to go you can over correct because you know the
other end will pull it back. When the osc is ok, do the mixer, then the
antenna. Coil for low end, cap for high end. Do this for each band. It
sometimes takes me 2 or 3 hours to properly align and calibrate a radio.
I have done hundreds starting in 1946 through today. I just did a S-40B.
Good luck.
