I transfer old LP's and other records to CD. In the process, I eliminate
unwanted noise using digital filtering software. My current software has a
feature called a "Virtual Valve Amplifier", wherein the characteristics of a
number of tube amplifiers have been digitally captured and may be used to
adjust the quality of the .WAV file before burning the CD, if the user so
desires. To me, this seems a better alternative than adding to the computer's
heat load with some tubes. Furthermore, I doubt if the average human ear
really has the capability to hear the so-called "warmth" or "glow" associated
with a tube amplifier. These notions exist only in the mind of the purist or
romantic. An excellent discussion of this topic can be found in the Letters
section of the Winter 2003 issue of "American Heritage of Invention &
Technology" in the form of a letter from Wayne Chou, founder and former CEO
of C/M Laboratories.

Keep up a most enjoyable forum.
