I spent a lot of time fixing up an old TR7 for a friend and then using it
for a few months.  There were several components needing replacing plus a
lot of problems which went away when I went through the unit pushing on
connectors and wiggling wire bundles.  All of those connector pins and
sockets give rise to problems in those old units.

I ended up removing every card and carefully polishing all pins and sockets
with fine emery cloth (wrapped around a small stick for the female
connectors sockets) before I got the thing to work reliably.  Maybe that is
where your problem is.
