[Hallicrafters] SX-42 question

Hi folks -
This morning an SX-42 showed up on Ebay with no reserve. I've been looking
for either or both an SX-42 and an SX-28. This SX-42 mentions he got sound
with earphones but not a lot of volume. The unit looks reasonably clean. If
there are problems with it it would be my first attempt at solving them.
  I can be determined but I'm not exactly a radio genious. If anybody takes
a look at this Ebay ad - could you give ANY opinions? Possible easy fix?
Total crap shoot? Possibly nothing wrong? All thoughts to this newbie would
be most appreciated.
