Folks....below where I said I would just 'dump the cabs';
That was a figure of speech, I am keeping all these cabinets in case
some speaker(s) turn up.
Please stop bombarding the mailbox with offers to pick them up, buy
them, whatever.
Thanks.

Guys.....I tried the Rat Shack speakers in the oval Collins style and
also round style for some National and Halli R-46 and R46-B cabinets I
have.....
Forget about the Rat Shack stuff...they all sounded tinny without any
bass at all after I mounted them in their respective cabinets so I took
them all back.
I still haven't found any replacements that sound good so I am going to
try to get them reconed or if that wont work just dump the cabs.

Craig,
Can't help with any suggestions on the reconing sorry.
But! When I was looking for a speaker to replace a completely missing
one in my S-38 I was emailed by a gent that had an S-38 and he said the
previous owner had put in a Radio Shack 4" speaker, part #40-1421..
I bought one and while my radio is not working I cannot tell you how it
sounds but I can confirm that it will easily fit inside and onto two of
the
mounting studs. So fortunately there is no drilling of the speaker
basket
to make it fit the studs nor any S-38 chassis modification needed at
all.
Unfortunately though when I picked mine up about a three months I
found out that it is a discontinued part. So it may take some leg work
and calling around to find one. If you go to a Radio shack store have
them check thier stock room physically and if they do not have it ask
them to query some of the other stores in your area. If they find it
they
can get it sent directly to you at home or to the store you're at and
you can pick it up when it comes in there.
I hope I was able to help! Just don't ask me about transformers ;-)
Good luck!
- Ken
p.s. the RS speaker specs from the box are:
Price: $4.95
4", dual cone
4ohm imped.
138-16khz freq resp
Power - 20watt nominal/ 60watt max
5.3 oz weight
