The relay must be in an upright position to operate properly. (The mercury 
has to settle to the bottom.)

Nope, sorry, but a 10 K ohm coil relay of other kind will likely work ok.

I don't know either, but if the thing is 10 k ohm in the coil, or 
thereabouts, and has the same pin arrangement, it likely will work ok.
