[Hallicrafters] SX-111 Alignment Question

Thank You Glen & Tony,
I've never seen caps like those and I thought that possibly the whole tops
turned. I would have never guessed that they needed to be heated to melt the
solder so that they could be adjusted.
I took the cowards approach and aligned around the oscillator trimmers and
the dial scale came in pretty close to perfect without moving the
capacitors. I gained a lot of sensitivity around the mixer and antenna coil
adjustments. I'm very pleased with the results and will probably leave well
enough alone. I'll leave it play on the bench for a while and see what I
think of it....
Thanks for your insight and help....

Every SX-111 that I have aligned (have seen several)
has had these trimmer capacitors actually soldered in
place. You have to carefully unsolder then you can
use about anything to turn the shaft (it is at ground
potential). The adjustment is pretty critical,
especially on the oscillator ones.

Chuck:
i just restored two SX 111's and i did not touch any of the round caps. if
i recall they only need moved if someone had moved them. you should be able
to do everything with the coils and the trimmer pads.

Is there anything to beware of about these?
