[Hallicrafters] SX-42 S-Meter Circuit

I have encountered a problem with my SX-42 S meter.  With the AVC on, the meter will tick up on receiving a strong signal, but immediately return to the zero position even though the strong signal remains tuned in.  The S meter advances when the sensitivity control is moved to less sensitivity.

I cannot follow the AVC line through the receiver to see how it affects the S meter.  

If anyone can give me some help better understanding these circuits, I would be very grateful.
