[Hallicrafters] Halligan And German Tanks

An elderly WW2 Vetern, and Ham since the thirties, told me that he thinks
William Halligan, Sr. was the person who figured out that the Germans were using
30 Mcs for their Tank transmissions. The Germans presumed that the range would
not be very far. Apparently William Halligan developed a receiver that heard
them here in the United States. 	
	
Does anyone know if this story is true? If so, what rx was developed?
