All:Just wanted to say my SX-28 rx (which I received yesterday) is playing beautifully except for a minor glitch: while talking on the land line with a Barry Grant carb technician on an acceration secondary leanout condition (for you car nut types) when I saw (and smelled) wisps of smoke wafting from the cabinet. Panicking, I couldn't turn off the SX-28 fast enough. The tech thought I was a nutcase as I hesitated trying to locate the plug under the desk. Well, I pulled the plug and the H was dead. After I got my explanation, I turned back to the Halli and saw that the fuse was blown. Taking another hour to examine the problem, it turned out that the B+ feed to the 6L7 tube was burnt: a 2.7K resistor was toast. Looking at the circuit closely, I could see how the 2.7k resistor could be fried: either B+ made contact with the IF can or the .02 bypass cap (a paper type no less) became fried. Turns out the cap was shorted. After removing the cap from the rx, I noticed that it was cracked on the other side. A DVM check confirmed that. So, I got my resistors (didn't have a 2.7 k resistor on hand) so I jury rigged a temporary 2K substitute for the time being. I also didn't have a replacement .02 uF 400 VDC cap to I used one of my .033 /300 VDC plastic caps from a throwout bin my college EE department had in a corner. After firing the '28 up, it played beautiful AM broadcast music on a jazz station emanating from a local station somewhere in Carmel/Monterey. Now my question: I have A LOT of these .033/300VDC plastic caps. I would like to replace all of the .02 papers in my SX-28, particularly on the B+ feeds throughout the various parts of the rx. I'll buy the others. Now there shouldn't be any problem doing this, right???? Thanks. Cal, N6KYR.
