Unfortunately, it is all true.  A "blooming meter" refers to the habit of
certain S-meter cases in some Hallicrafters receivers to split in a number of
places from the rear of the case towards the front. In areas where there is
no screw securing the metal case to the phenolic rear panel of the meter, the
metal appears to turn out or "bloom", just like a large flower.  This is not
uncommon in receivers like the SX-24, SX-25 and SX-28.  It does not appear to
harm the workings of the meter but if it is necessary to remove the meter
from the panel for maintenance or to allow the panel to be refinished, it can
be difficult to impossible to reinstall it because with the metal turned
back, it will not fit in the hole.  I have used a piston ring compressor to
facilitate reinstallation, but it is still not a fun task.  The repair kit
mentioned on this reflector a couple of days ago sounds like the ultimate
solution and the price is well worth the value of the time and deleted
epathets saved trying to reinstall a meter the hard way!
