I've had that happen on a few vintage receivers where the eventual cure
was to clean up bearings on the main tuning capacitor.  Loosen the rear
bearing if adjustable,  clean if needed and re-tension.  Sometimes just
loosening then tightening the bearing is enough.  I don't have a 101
within convenient eyesight range to see exactly how the bearing is
constructed, but most quality variable capacitors have an adjustable
rear bearing.  Try to return the bearing to as close to original
position if possible, as it may shift the position of the rotor plates
during adjustment.  VFO realignment afterwards may or may not be
necessary.
