[Hallicrafters] Close Copy Of S-38 By Trio?

I don't know if the Trio 9R-42J is exactly the same radio, but I have a Lafayette He-10 which is also a "clone" of the S-38 (Lafayette marketed also a kit version of it, called KT-200). The Lafayette radios were indeed built by Trio, and manufactured between 1959-1963. Perhaps the Trio 9R-42J is an earlier version.

The term "clone", however, is rather misleading. The design is obviously intende to be similar to the S-38 (The two facing half-moon dials), but the He-10 (and KT-200) is a 9 tubes receiver with one rf and two IF stages, and overall superior to the S-38.

Tube lineup:
6BD6 RF amp
6BE6 mixer
6BE6 HF oscill.
6BD6 ist IF amp
6BD6 2nd IF amp.
6AV6 Detector/AVC/AF amp.
6AV6 BFO/ANL
6AR5 Audio output
5Y3GT rect.

I don't remember where I read it or heard it, but the HE-10 is a "s-38 on steroids" (it weighs 20 lb vs the 11lb of the S-38).
Hope this helps.
By the way, the source of this info. is Fred Osterman's book "Shortwave Receivers, Past & Present", 3rd ed.

Subject: [Hallicrafters] Close Copy Of S-38 By Trio?

This question is from Ben Wallace: please reply to the list.

I was fortunate to come across a Trio 9R-42J Receiver that is in near
perfect condition. It appears to be a Hallicrafters S-38 clone but
incorporates a few extra features, including an S-meter. I found some
info
on a Japanese site that indicated it was manufactured in 1958. Anyone
else
on your Hallicrafters site have more info?

Thanks -- Ben
