The hum-buck system was used from the 1920s into the
1940s and works very well. However, if you get the
voice-coil wires backwards, all that you will get out
of the speaker is hum!
If at all possible, stay with the original speaker or
at least one of the same type. If there are large
holes in the paper cone, you can actually repair them
with tablet paper (the "Big Chief" type works very
well) using rubber cement to hold the new paper in
place. I have actually replaced well over 80% of the
paper in a speaker for a radio from the 1920s.
