The original power transformer in the SX-42 has a decorative cover with an
"h" stamped in it. If your transformer is the original the cover would be
attached to the transformer with two brackets. Underneath you would see the
paper wrapped winding core. It is possible someone replaced the transformer
with a Thordarson or Stancor or something and figured out a way to attach the
original "h" cover to it for appearance. There is a potential risk in running
that SX-42 unless you or someone has already been in there and fixed it.
Apparently the SX-42 has some problem capacitors that are usually leaky and
end up causing the contacts on one of the bandswitch wafers to burn. Look for
dark spots in the wafers under the contacts. If it has been in trouble for a
while it will char the wafer and turn it into carbon which will then short.
For further info go to www.google.com and type in a search on SX-42. Two good
sources of info that come to mind are reports written by A.B. Bonds and
Phil's Old Radios about SX-42 restoration with an emphasis on capacitor
replacement and the bandswitch problem you could have if you don't do it.
There was someone on the Hallicrafters list recently that was offering repro
tuning dial clutch parts for the SX-42. Another list member said they were
perfect replacements for the originals. You might search the Hallicrafters
list archives for further info if you need those.
