Alan,

You are right on both counts re the HT-18. It was (and still is) used a QRP rig 
and/or a VFO to drive a larger rig.

I'm sure some were lashed up to the HT-20, which was Hallicrafters contemporary 
medium-power HF rig. In 1947, however, prior to the introduction of the HT-20, 
Mr. Halligan & Co. sent the HT-18 on the Gatti-Hallicrafters "Mountains of the 
Moon" DXpedition to Africa, where it was used to drive a BC-610 (derived from 
the pre-war HT-4).

Even today, it make a nice little station when paired with the S-53(A) receiver.
