Before zapping the coil -- if you haven't already tried this -- refresh
the solder connections where the coil wire ends go to the terminals. Use
some fresh solder and go easy. I'm told that a common failure point for
coils is at the solder connections, even if it's not an obviously broken
connection. Solder connections can very gradually deteriorate due to
mixed metals, flux residues that didn't originally boil off, varnish,
etc. inside the joint. (Visual inspection won't detect it -- the joint
doesn't go dull or crystallize like a "cold solder joint" when originally
made. Coils, what with litz wire and/or thin enameled wire are more
prone to hidden corrosion than usual. It takes only a very thin film of
contaminant to do the deed. In some cases, it will create a resistor or
capacitor, or even a diode, if not an open connection, so I'm told. If
freshening the joint doesn't work, I'd try the high voltage approach as
suggested.
