An old "trick" that works "sometimes" (not that often,
but enough to try it!), is to charge up a fairly large
electrolytic capacitor. Then, take leads from the
terminals of the capacitor and connect them to the
terminals of the coil. Sometimes, this will cause an
arc at the break and actually weld the wires together.
I would use a capacitor in the 100 to 200 mfd range.
Just make sure that you don't touch the contacts on
the capacitor. Connect the wires together after
trying this to discharge the capacitor just in case
the "trick" didn't work.

I have inspected the coil and see no obvious broken
wires etc, so it must be bad deeper in the coil
windings.
