As Hallicrafters was oft to do, there are always exceptions. I have a
SX-111 mk1a (by the chassis stamp) that does not have the product
detector. The product detector tube when added was located in the
center rear of the chassis where the power supply filter can is located
on the diode-only detector models, as I recall.
Actually my 111 does a fairly clean job of demodulating SSB with only
minor RF gain control riding necessary on the extra-strong sigs. Must
have pretty high BFO injection.
