Sandy.
Welcome. It's plastic.
Last year I restored an S-40A back to working condition.
My tips are:
- Make sure you have the right version of the schematic. There were variations in the wiring during the various production runs. Alvin Bernard (his email is on the website under "Recommended Services") can most likely hook you up with the RIGHT schematic, if you don't have the original.
- Replace all the capacitors, except the square ones in the pF range. Almost all the paper and oil caps in mine were bad, and every one of the old square, plastic, dotted small caps was good.
- I'd say about 2/3 of the resistors in mine were bad too. While replacing the caps, check the resistors and replace all out of tolerance.
- Beware the "GIMMICK" capacitor that makes the BFO work. The GIMMICK is two wires twisted together to obtain a few pF of capacitance. I replaced it with a 6 pF cap and it works just fine. A trimmer would work too.
- Spray the bandswitch contacts thoroughly with contact cleaner.
- Do the tube pinout resistance checks first. Before powering up, get them right. Then power it up and check voltages.
- Once the caps and resistors were squared away, the resistances and voltages on the tube pinout charts are very accurate.
Once you're done, you'll love the way it sounds! Mine's really ugly, and could use a panel refinishing job, but I like it the way it is.

Subject: [Hallicrafters] S40 Dial Glass
I am redoing an S40 and the dial glass is missing.
The glass over the bandspread dial is actually plastic, is the main
tuning dial glass
also plastic? I'm new at this and any other suggestions re: this
receiver would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Sandy
