[Hallicrafters] Gear remembered and a question

Having gathered a SR-2000 and S72 the last week I remembered back to some
Hallicrafters equipment used or worked in the past. My first receiver
(beyond a RCA 811K console radio) was the S-40B. A nearby neighbor had a
SX-71 and DX-100 on 40 with a trap dipole. I remember W5JHS calling the
Gulf Coast Hurricane Net with his HT-9 on AM and the W5 in another city
calling the Mississippi magnolia Net on 3870 with a HT-20 and homebrew VFO.
Our club ran Field day successfully for many years (3A) and the
hallicrafters gear we used included a HT-40 and matching RX in 1961 (not too
good) and the SX-117/HT-44 pair in 1963-6 on 20 SSB with my old Gonset
Tri-Band beam (worked great). We broke 1000 QSOs in 1963 on 20 alone and
easily
had the top 3A score from W5KHB.
Now for a question......How many have actually seen (let alone operate)
either of the Hallicrafters Console stations. The SR-500 (1955-57) or the
SR-1000 (1961-2). The SR-500 included the SX-100 RX, HT-30 exciter, and
HT-31 linear (not to be confused with the later SR-500 transceiver). I
worked
ET3RS from Police HQ in Ethopia operated by Rundy W3ZA(later K3ZA/K4ZA).
Rundy worked for Westrex and also worked me from W3ZA/EP, FL8ZA, OD5,
9K3TL/NZ and other rare locations. I have never seen one except for the ads
in the ARRL Handbook. Have you????
The SR-1000 included the SX101, HT-32, and HT-33 amp. I never worked one
let alone saw one. I do know that Maxwell Meyers W2BIB had one with a
SX-115 receiver instead of the SX101. W2BIB and Bill Halligan W9AC helped
set up the HV1CN Vatican station in 1961. They had the gear but not in a
SR-1000 configuration. Have you ever seen or worked the SR-1000????
Back to testing and checking the SR-2000!
