Lloyd......I know how you feel. I came up with a way to repair Collins KWS-1
tuning knobs. The common problem with them is a deformation of the diameter
that holds the shaft, rendering them useless. I made a machining fixture to
hold the knobs, bought some materials and was successful on mine and a few
others that took me up on the offer I made. Keep in mind that they are JUNK
if not repaired. I said I would fix them for FREE and all I expected was a
reimbursement for postage. The first three or four went fine and then it
started. After a particularly nasty gent in Texas and one in California took
me to task for modifying the knob (the mod was internal and absolutely could
not be seen) I had had enough and withdrew my offer. I now do not offer that
service at all. (Remember the part was USELESS unless repaired) I have also
given prices for machining of amp parts (panels, connecting shafts, sub
chassis, etc.) and am often met with very surprised builders who think the
machine shop was a welfare operation. Even though the prices were down to
dirt minimum. So again, I decided to offer that service only to friends.
Dealing with the public at large is too hard and I'm too old to bother with
it.
By the way folks.....The SX-100 that we have been picking parts off of is
about finished. There is really nothing left now except the chassis, the
main tuning dial and glass, and a very beat up "S" meter. It goes in the
burial Monday. Even that project resulted in about 75% success, as some did
not send reimbursement for postage, or even an email that they received the
parts. The old rig sure gave up a lot though, and I'm sure there are at least
a few rigs now running because of this one, and I don't know how many before
I got it......................73 Al/W8FAX
