Mike and Co.,
I've stripped and painted several cabinets. here's what I have done.
First, you must understand that the original Halli paints were a one part
wrinkle finish. There is no exact replacement. However, we can make the
radio cabinets come out pretty close.
The first thing I did was take the cabinet to a furniture restoration
company and have them strip the old paint. This is particularly appealing
with the larger cabinets like the SX28, which I have done 2. Then I applied
a good primer to the cabinet. Satisfied with that, I then applied a wrinkle
finish. There is a trick there. You must apply the paint to a heated
cabinet. I used a space heater to get the cabinet good and hot. I could
not find any other satisfactory method to get a consistent wrinkle finish.
The last step is to use one of the R&R Paints (now Shelton?) as the finish
enamel coat. The result is good to me, and I'm fussy.
Other things I did. I sent some pieces of the chassis of some radios to be
replated (Cadmium). I also had some pieces bead blasted. On the chassis, I
like a metal restorer like Blue Magic. It's lots of work, but works well.
Back to work here...
73,
Pete

Subject: [Hallicrafters] Halli cabinet refinishing preparations
Greetings
I wont bother you with the details of how I refinished an SX-32 cabinet, but
I was wondering if you would share some of your secrets with me as I will be
doing another in the very near future.
After doing mine with paint strippers etc., I found myself cursing the day
that I sold my air compressor and sandblasting apparatus. I take it that
most of you go the bead blast route, then what? I've heard some of you go
the way of powder coating, but can you match the Halli colours that way. I
just ordered two cans of paint from Mike Shelton and wondered if they had
the wrinkle effect? Please give me some hints, you guys are the masters and
my mentors, I'm but a newbie. Thanks in advance. PS...still looking for
those SX-28 dials, rf cover, rubber feet, and rear binding posts.
from the land of twisted metal,
Mike Smout
