[Hallicrafters] Shipping by UPS

Been down with the flu. I just came up for air this morning and perking
somewhat better, I sat down to read my back email and see all this good
stuff on packing. I have been on a personal quest to inform sellers who
ship to me what a reasonable packing is for radios etc. A couple of guys
have gotten downright huffy. They weren’t lovers of BA, just antique
shop or flea market sellers.
My ultimate solution has been to never accept radios by any shipper
other than United States Postal Service parcel post insured. I have not
had any damage to an item shipped that way, and never a loss due to the
UPS driver leaving the item under the bushes or etc. The Postal service
has a number of locations often convenient for both pick up and
delivery. When your item comes in, it is stored inside and you get a
slip to pick it up. I have joked around with the postmen at my PO so
they know there is “another of Ketner’s radios” in the shelf. Since they
know me, they often go out of their way to handle the item because they
have an idea what it is.
As a friend of mine is fond of saying, sometimes the old ways are
the best.

Anyhow, what if all of us who ship great old radios to and fro were
to massively insist to all shippers that the packing be a certain level
or meet our guidelines? Couldn’t we go at the problem at what seems to
be its cause, poor packing? Maybe we could draft a set of packing
guidelines and call them VINTAGE RADIO PACKING STANDARDS. Then if we all
encouraged folks to follow these, it might help some.
