I have shipped and received some awfully heavy stuff (98# S-36, 92#
Spectrum Analyzers, Collins 30L1, etc) and have never had a problem
if the item is cushioned (tightly wrapped) in about 6 layers (the
heavier,
the thicker) of LARGE bubble wrap (don't skimp here, you need thickness)
and the remaining volume in a good box packed with peanuts. Good
boxes come free from "Pier 1" (if they can ship ceramic stuff from China,
I figure it ought to handle a radio). The bubble wrap is available from
box stores like "Econo box" for $24 for a very large roll.
The key is many layers of LARGE bubble wrap. With two layers the
forces are too high (radio with inertia meets fixed floor) and you pop
bubbles. With 6+ layers they are not. Pack an egg in 1 layer, 2 layers,
3 layers, etc and toss it ....fun for the grand kids too.
