[Hallicrafters] Shipping radio sets via UPS

I may as well throw in another one as well. The box I got today was
packed professionally in Canada by Purolator. Double boxed, foamed in
place, oversize, etc, and they built two bar bell type handles onto the
box sides so it could be picked up, carried, and put down easily. The
box was handed off to AirBorne after entering the US. It arrived 5 days
beyond the Purolator commitment, so who knows what happened along the
way. Shipping and packing cost $110. And still it was damaged--a split
wooden cabinet etc.
When I was in Air Force OTS I was assigned to work Saturdays in the base
PO. Most of the personnel were US PO employees, but there were a few
Air Force grunts. I could not believe what I saw. The workers made
guesses as to what many of the boxes contained and took pleasure in
throwing or tossing the lighter ones to the appropriate area of the mail
facility. The larger boxes were lugged to the right vicinity, dropped
to a concrete floor, or tossed a few feet if possible. There were
usually gales of laughter if the sounds of something breaking could be
heard.
This was a long time ago, the late 60's, but I suspect things haven't
changed a lot since then.
Did any of you see the tapes last year that a news service took at an
airport after a tip? The baggage handlers were dumping suitcases and
packages from a jetliner to the runway and others were then tossing them
onto a baggage truck. Some of them missed the truck and returned to the
cement. An airline executive interviewed by the network said the workers
had been released.
My opinion is that you can pack well enough to meet the various drop
test standards, but you probably are not going to pack well enough to
guard against deliberate abuse by people intentionally inflicting
damage.

While I'm chiming in, I may as well go another one ..
Hank's right, of course. I've dealt with 100's of MBE's. 99.9% can't
pack worth a darn.
