[Hallicrafters] 'Lytic caps needed for Scott amp.

Hi Phil -
Here's what you might want to do to keep it original-looking: Cut the FP
cans at or just above the crease near the base with a band saw (or a hacksaw
if very careful). Rotate can while cutting and don't cut all the way thru so
you can possibly yank out the guts using the base to pull on. Remove
remaining guts with longnose pliers - wear rubber gloves. Clean can. Replace
guts with new caps that will fit inside the can. Parallel and series
combinations are permissible to obtain the correct value as well as fit in
there. (No equalizing resistors are necessary on same-value caps in series
due to improved manufacturing methods these days.) I use large heatshrink
tubing to hold everything together. Wire to the proper terminals on the can
base. Insulate leads well using Teflon sleeving. Glue back together (a bead
of clear RTV) and I like to use a band of clear heat shrink on the outside
over the joint after the RTV is dry for additional strength. This is what
the antique radio guys do and it looks and works great. It doesn't take long
to do once you get the hang of it. Others may have their own variation on
this but this has worked for me (YMMV). You can do the same with old
cardboard tube electroytics using hot melt glue on the ends.
