As you search for additional test gear, I would encourage you to
consider a good old signal tracer. I find it to be one of the most
frequently used pieces of test gear on my bench. For a beginner, the
Eico and Heath series offer good value as you probably know. If you can
find something better at a similar price, so much the better. You might
also consider a good book to help you understand the circuits you are
working on. One of the best one's that I have found is Elements of
Radio Servicing, 3rd edition, by Marcus and Levy. You can usually find
one at a used book place for less than $50 and if you plan to continue
in this aspect of the hobby, it might be the best $50 you will ever
spend! 8*) To find a copy, go to http://www.abebooks.com The second
edition is only slightly less desirable.

Good luck with your SX-42 project. Keep us informed of your progress
and problems...solved and otherwise.

Hey, how did you guys sense my lack of radio knowledge *grin*. True, I
don't have the level of knowledge that you posess, but I do have a teeny
ween bit. I took electrical shop in high school and fumbled around with
radios while there. Built a few projects and managed, with some degree
of luck to actually repair some broken radios, but again, it was mostly
luck. Since I started to collect Hallicrafters (three months ago) I
started to read every article that I could lay my hands on regarding
this or that, either from a magazine or the internet or the
Hallicrafters site. I actually re-capped my first Halli two months ago,
an S-40 to be exact. I ordered all of the capacitors, mylar and
electrolytic, and a schematic to boot, in order to do the job. It took
me about two or three hours to complete, but I had a ball doing it and
the radio sounds great. I just picked up a signal generator at a Hamfest
a month ago and plan on doing an alignment in the very near future. At
the Lansing Show I picked up a tube tester and have detected a few bad
tubes on the 42. Whether this is a result of the bad caps, I don't know.
I am now looking for a good multi-meter and an instrument to check out
capacitors. With these items, I should be able to do most of my work.
Again, I'm learning, but that is something that we all have to go
through and there is never a point where we can say we've learned
enough. I really appreciate all of your opinions and sharing your wisdom
with a "newbie". It is nice to know that I can come to you guys with a
direct question and get a direct answer! As always, thanks a bazillion.
Mike in Sarnia.
