I remember an old troubleshooting technique of connecting a light bulb in 
series with the piece of equipment that you were testing.  This was 
primarily for finding shorts, but you could also use it to reduce voltage 
to the radio. Put a couple of light sockets in parallel and screw in one 
bulb at a time to increase voltage.
