Don't know what "add on" that you are talking about.
For the same insurance amount, size, etc., charges
that are put on by both, FedEx ground comes out to be,
on average, 25% to 30% cheaper than UPS, at least in
this area. Also, I have found that the "estimate"
that you get from FedEx on their Internet site is
usually slightly more than the actual charges. It is
just the opposite with UPS, their estimates from their
Internet site are usually lower than the actual cost
(up to 25% more cost at the counter).
I do deal directly with both companies through their
company owned counters (2 blocks apart, 2 miles from
my house). I don't have any idea as to the contract
stations since they do add to the basic UPS/FedEx
costs. That may definitely make a difference. There
is a contract station about 2 blocks from my house,
and I do know that they almost double the cost for
mailing packages than the USPS charges. Thus, I don't
"deal" with them. They do handle both FedEx and UPS.

I have used both and quit using FedEx ground because
after all of the add on they cost more.
