I can think of three reasons.  First,  for the challenge of it.  Second, for
the pride taken in a job well done -- yes, vanity, but we all have it!!
Third, to make it as authentic as possible.

Like it or not,  those of us that restore radios, and it doesn't matter what
definition you use, are artists!!   Instead of paint, we use
soldering irons and resistors;  our canvass is radios of yesteryear.

Why use original pieces ??  Ask people why they stand in line to see
restored autos.   Why do people stand in line to tour a meticulously
restored Boeing B-17 or Lockheed Constellation?  Because the work is
incredicble,  and beautiful to observe !!

Geeze Duane..... if I was looking for a "cost effective" hobby, then
doing BA restorations wouldn't be it !!   I restore BA radios because
I find it fun !!    If I have to place a dollar value on the time I spend
doing the work,  I've a lost a ton of money in this hobby.

Whatever you definition of restoration,  go for it with gusto !!  Enjoy !!
