Thanks very much to all who replied to this question. The consensus is
that Riders actually made a mistake on the schematic (page 9-5) of the
S-22 in listing the IF Peak as 465 k/c. The preponderance of evidence
indicates that this number was incorrectly placed on the schematic.
Evidence? Contemporary advertisements for the S-22 indicated an IF of
1600 k/c. The Dachis and Moore books do the same. The Osterman book
says 465 k/c. In fact the Riders schematic and the Osterman book are
the only indications that the IF was anything other than 1600 k/c.
Until someone can further illuminate this mini-mystery, I'm going to
assume that Rider made a mistake and Osterman used the Rider material as
his resource, further compounding the error. Oh, one other bit of
evidence is that on Riders page 9-4 you will find 1600 k/c indicated on
the tops of the IF cans and page 9-6 indicates that for alignment of the
IF, the sig gen should be set for 1600 k/c. That leaves page 9-5 with
465 k/c as an obvious editorial error.
Thanks to John Bartley of Stittsville, Ontario for calling attention to
the discrepancy and then providing much of the evidence when I didn't
immediately agree with him.
