Hi Bob,

The main things that cause power tranny failureare  bad filter caps and 
running too high an input voltage for the transformer design.  On any old 
tranny powered rig, check the manufacturers specs for voltage input range and 
then check your line voltage.  Household line voltages have climbed over the 
years and if it is much over the design specs, the trannys revolt and get too 
hot, leading to eventual failure.

Switching to solid state rectifiers will definately cut the heat factor due 
to the fact that the tranny doesn't have to put out the added filament 
current, but if you go that route, be sure the HV and LHV do not exceed 
transmitter design specs or you could find yourself with other problems.
