February 20th is a very special date for America, and in particular, for John
Glenn. It was on February 20, 1962 that he rode atop an Atlas missile in
Friendship 7 to become the first United States astronaut to orbit the Earth.
Tomorrow is the fortieth anniversary of that historic event. If you have NASA
TV, John Glenn will be speaking to the crew onboard the ISS (International Space
Station) at about 4:00 PM EST. This will be after the nearly seven hour space
walk scheduled for Wednesday by the two USA astronauts aboard the ISS.
I was in high school in February 1962 and watch the launch on a black/white 19
inch TV set in the center of the gymnasium floor. Rather difficult to see from
the bleachers that lined the basketball court.
I have a personalized autograph from U.S. Senator/Astronaut John Glenn on a NASA
photo of the shuttle mission he took several years ago to become the oldest USA
astronaut. A treasure I consider as priceless.
I am dedicating the HCI Global Glow Roundtable on Wednesday February 20, 2002 to
John Glenn and the accomplishments he helped to make possible. Join us with
those Hallicrafters that still go glow in the dark to commemorate this historic
date. Bring along your memories of the NASA space program, where you were on
July 20, 1969 when Apollo 11 landed the LLM called the Eagle on the surface of
the Moon and other interstellar and celestial memories. Tonight on the Black
Sheep reruns they used a Ham radio to contact Major Greg Boyington's mother in
San Francisco. Wonder if it was a Hallicrafters? Anybody see this one and know?
The Global Glow will begin at 7:00 PM EST, (0000 UTC). I will be on the air at
6:30 PM EST, (2330 UTC), for those who care to come early and punch propagation
holes. The frequency will be 14.315 Mhz usb +/- for key clicks, mike splatter
and gastrointestinal rumblings as my bowels recover from that Chinese pork fried
rice food poisoning that nearly got you a new NCS.
Can anybody tell me who wrote the column in Popular Electronics that was
entitled: Key Clicks And Mike Splatter?
The back up frequencies are: 14.322 and 14.328 Mhz usb.
I hope to hear many of you tomorrow evening to share some Hallicrafters facts,
fun and fantasy with. Frogzilla has promised to play a musical salute to
commemorate the NASA anniversary on some instrument he picked up while touring
NC. Hope to hear you then!
