Please pay attention to this and make the necessary changes in your mail client
software:
If you are an AOL user, remember they are intentionally incompatible with most
other mail clients. Set your AOL software for 'plain text', NOT their AOL
format! It will be rejected by the 'mailman' software, just as it was when the
software running these lists was 'majordomo'.
For all others: do NOT use html, multi-part alternative, mixed- and so forth.
Use 'plain text'.
many of you write weekly complaining that you can receive mail, but you can not
post to the lists. It just never appears. The 'mailman' program sends you
notification of rejection and even tells you why it was rejected. In the vast
majority of the cases, it is for two reasons:
1. the post is from somebody who is not subscribed to the list.
2. the post is in html or multi-part alternative. You can be set for plain text,
and still be using multi-part alternative format!
I am going to write a 'how to use' message and incorporate it into every
'welcome' message that is sent out by the system when a person first subscribes.
Perhaps it will be helpful in learning how to post, and how not to post.
However, it will be useless if you do not read it and save it for future
reference. Using these lists is not difficult, if you understand your mail
client software. You do NOT have to be a computer wizard or software consultant
to do this either. A general awareness is sufficient. But you do need to take
the time to learn how and this will require a little time, study and practice.
It won't be fatal and it will make your use of the various mail lists much much
easier, less frustrating and downright fun.
For the AOL people: version 5.0 is a heck of a lot better than the error riddled
version 6.0 as you have doubtless already discovered. An upgrade is not
necessarily a step up or an improvement. (Did any of you ever happen to notice
how many different software products had a totally screwed up version 6.0?) The
AOL version 7.0 is not receiving great reviews by AOL users either, as many have
written to tell me of their fruitless efforts trying to work with the AOL tech
support? people. Some went back to version 5.0 and solved their issues that way.
If I can assist any of you with a list problem, write me direct at:
