if you are using solid state replacements in the rectifiers, or are doing heavy service you must use the 6146B
Glen Zook <gzook at yahoo.com> wrote:You can go with the 6146A as well as the 6146. The
only difference between the plain and the "A" version
is the make up of the heater (filament). The "A"
version has what RCA called the "dark heater" which is
less critical of voltage and is supposedly more
rugged. The 6146B is a different tube and can cause
problems in a lot of the equipment that was designed
for the 6146 / 6146A series. In fact, with
transmitters that run a pair of 6146 tubes, you can
mix the 6146 and the 6146A. But, NEVER mix a 6146 or
6146A with a 6146B. That will get you into trouble in
a hurry!

If you haven't read the article on the 6146 family of
tubes that was published in Electric Radio a couple of
years ago, I have both the text and the illustrations
on both of the websites that appear as part of my
signature on the bottom of this E-Mail.

The 6146W tubes manufactured after 1964 are usually of
the 6146B equivalents. Unfortunately, the military
did not change the nomenclature when the tubes went
from the 6146 to the 6146A to the 6146B.

This xmitter uses plain 6146 pentodes (and I'm staying
with the same tube...not the A or B).
